The port of Shanghai has retained its status as the world’s business container port for the ninth consecutive year, must to the delight of our colleagues in China’s biggest city.
Shanghai’s throughput in 2018 reached 42.01m teu’s, an increase of 4% on 2017, reaching a record high and a net profit of RMB10.28bn.
The port’s improved performance was due in some measure to a recovery in the global economy, and continued growth of China’s import and export volumes.
Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), in its 2018 performance brief report, highlighted improvements in service capability and efficiency to achieve continued stable growth, across its 46 container berths, and 6m square metres of container yards.
As in previous years Chinese ports continue to dominate the top container port list, with Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Guangzhou, Qingdao and Tianjin all making the top 10.
